Equipment: Weapons and Items

Everything an officer can find in the city. Loot is scattered through houses, the park, car boots and the police armoury. The deeper you go into the big corner complex, the rarer it gets. You carry your pistol, three more guns and six utilities, until a gunsling or a backpack makes room for more.

Weapons

Pistol

In every officer’s hand

Every officer starts with one. It never runs out of ammunition and can never be dropped. Pick up a second and you carry one in each hand: two rounds a pull, side by side, and it costs no slot.

SMG

Common

A 9mm submachine gun. Each round does little, but a held burst stops a charging zombie dead. Use it to pin things down, not to kill them.

Assault Rifle

Carried by soldiers

A soldier’s rifle: fully automatic, accurate, and a heavier round than the SMG.

Shotgun

Common

Eight pellets in a cone. It shreds anything at arm’s length and does almost nothing across a street.

Bolt Action Rifle

Common

The commonest gun in the city. A slow bolt and a heavy round: most hits drop a zombie outright, and the ones that do not are staggered for nearly a second.

M1 Garand

Uncommon

The same class of round as the bolt action at more than twice the rate. Less damage a shot, a wider spread, and far more volume.

Sniper Rifle

Rare

Long range, and the scope pushes your view out toward the crosshair so you can see what you are aiming at. A round to the face of a zombie that is coming straight at you takes its head off.

Heavy Machine Gun

Rare

Belt-fed and hopeless from the hip. Right-click to plant the bipod, which roots you in place; right-click again to pack it up. It cannot be carried together with a riot shield.

Charge Rifle

Uncommon

Hold to charge through four bars, release to fire an energy beam. A full charge burns through a crowd and through several walls, then the gun has to vent before it fires again. It is the only gun that can drop somebody who has been bitten but has not turned yet.

Flamethrower

Rare

Throws burning fuel to wherever you aim and sets the ground alight. The fire is the weapon. It cannot burn a healthy civilian to death, but it burns the infected and the dead without mercy. It is heavy and slow to swing.

Grenade Launcher

Exactly one in every city

Lobs explosive shells that bounce before they go off. A shell takes a door off its hinges.

Utilities

Carried in the utility slots. Some only work in your hand; most just have to be in your bag.

Cure Gun

Rare

Medicine, not a weapon, so it rides in a utility slot. A dose saves anybody who has been bitten and has not turned, officers included. While it is in your hand it shows you who is infected, and whether that includes you.

Ammo Box

Uncommon

Refills the gun in your hand. It stays on the floor if all you are holding is the pistol, or if your gun is already full.

Kevlar

Scarce

Every blue officer starts in one. A vest stops a zombie’s grab outright, so you cannot be infected through it, three times before it is spent. A spare vest takes a slot of its own and goes on when the first one is gone.

Riot Shield

Scarce

Goes up on your arm the moment you pick it up and turns away grabs from the front. Tap right-click to bash whatever is in front of you; hold right-click to sling it onto your back, where it covers you from behind instead.

Lozenge

Scarce

Used the moment you pick it up. It gives you back a charge of your voice, for shouting orders to the civilians.

Pocket Machine Gunner

Scarce

Puts down a grey officer behind a mounted machine gun and a wall of sandbags, facing the way you are looking. It slows everything that walks into its arc, and the dead have to tear the bags down to get past.

Smoke Grenade

Somewhere in the corner complex

Throw it and a helicopter answers the smoke, dropping soldiers where it lands.

Zombie Tracker

Scarce

An arrow round your officer that points at the nearest zombie anywhere in the city. It works while it is in your bag.

Binoculars

Scarce

Carried, they let you see further in every direction. In your hand, they push your view out toward the cursor.

Combat Boots

Scarce

Quicker on your feet, and your sprint lasts longer.

Grenades

Scarce

Three to a bundle. Thrown, it bounces, then goes off, and a blast takes doors off their hinges.

Gunsling

Scarce

Worn, not held. One more gun slot.

Survivor Beacon

Four in every city, one by the duck pond and one in the police station

Click to open a map of the city and pick a spot. A helicopter drops a soldier who walks there and puts the mast up. Then use the order wheel to send civilians to it. With a mast already up, another handset calls a supply run instead: first a Humvee with a gunner on the roof, then squads of soldiers to patrol the perimeter.

Thermal Goggles

Scarce

Worn. Nearby zombies you cannot see show up as heat through walls and doors.

Zap Mines

Scarce

Put down where you stand, it arms after a moment and drops whatever crosses it for a full minute.

Hand Radio

Scarce

Three calls, a minute apart. The first brings a SWAT van with a team that sweeps the city; the next two each bring a patrol car with two officers.

Backpack

Scarce

Worn, not held. Two more utility slots.
